You Are

“You Are?”, released in 2014, is considered by some the best Vow album. Again, this body of work consists of some newly re-recorded, old Vow songs (“I’m Over You, Flunky” and “Coal Fire”) and new material, including the title track. Keyboard duties fell to Andrew Louis (Andrew Louis Music) who provided the stunning piano performance on the ballad “Reflections on Saturday”.

    Boys In Their Games

Sleep tight, healthy, wealthy, wise. Uptight, I can’t close my eyes.
A chemical haze, lights in the sky. Something’s making the rabbits cry.
The ladder to fame, boys in their games and I don’t know why.

Payday for the ones who dare – strange ways of the entrepreneur.
A choke in the smoke, a sting in the eye, burning the wings of a butterfly,
Fanning the flames, boys in their games and I don’t know why.

Nose dive into make believe. Landslide into victory.
Allaying the fear, trashing the doubt – the power that blew its own fuses out.
The ladder to fame, boys in their games and I don’t know why.

Peepshow – anyone you know? Soho – there’s the new Bardot.
Pushing the march to make the boys sigh. An honest mistake for an alibi.    Pantomime dames, boys in their games and I don’t know why.

    I'm Over You, Flunky

You’ll be lonely by yourself, still alone with someone else. Don’t I know that?
Where’s the one that I once knew -holding hands with someone new? Don’t you know me?
With each new angry word I say, I know I’m driving you away. I don’t mean to.

Who’s your flunky? What’s the score? What do you want to hurt me for? I know I’m over you now.
Who’s the flunky on your case – another pretty tail to chase? I know I’m over you now.
I know I’m over getting over you now.

Line your lovers heel to toe, in single file, in tidy rows. You didn’t know them.
And every angry word I say is driving you further and further away. I don’t mean to.

Who’s your flunky turning on? By tomorrow he’ll be gone. I know I’m over you now.
I know I’m over getting over you now
But you know I’ve no idea why, or how it is you know the losing hand is mine.

Who’s your flunky? What’s the score? What do you want to hurt me for? I know I’m over you now.
I know I’m over getting over you now.

    You Are

You are a fleeting force of nature, much too soon gone.
    Nature’s course just keeps you moving on;
sailing to golden horizons (for all that’s worth).
The love that flows from your lips fills the whole universe.

    You are all suns and all their heavens, eternal friend;
the only soul salvation at journey’s end.
You smile while the future’s imploding as if you were
the elemental pieces of this whole universe.

I’ve never been to war. I hope to never be.
May your generation be the first one to be free of all that tyranny.

You are the only soul salvation.
You are a fleeting force of nature.
    You are the elemental pieces.
You are the love that flows from your lips.

    Coal Fire (Burn The Changes)

Outside fall the tears of rain. Inside cries the voice of pain.
Coal fire shadows lick my face. They expire in their rightful place.

Coal fire, coal fire, coal fire, coal fire

Now I’m back on the streets of this dirty old town, an invisible man with a curse and a frown. I’ve been wondering when and I’m wondering how to rekindle the flame and burn the changes.

This house used to be a home. Now this house it’s just wood and stone.
Upstairs, where the doors are closed, no flames penetrate that cold.

Coal fire, coal fire, coal fire, coal fire

I just wanted to know if you’re coming around to the happy hello or the final showdown.
I‘ve been wondering when and I’m wondering how to rekindle the flame and burn the changes.

Coal fire, coal fire, coal fire, coal fire

Are you thinking of me ‘cause I’m thinking of you.
I used to think for myself. Now I’m thinking for two.
But we know where to be and we know what to do
To rekindle the flame and burn the changes.

    Reflections on Saturday

Saturday, my reflections on Saturday… the kindest words you could offer were crueller still than the sea.
Eternity, it would take ‘til eternity to flood the darkness between us. We’d still be light years apart.
Second hand, you won’t always be second hand if you place your trust in a sad song and chain your heart to its bars.
I’m talking about a time when I thought so much of you, talking about a time when I had your touch.
And I know it’s not done, but I will be waiting here eternally ‘til you find the time.

Silent film, are you living a silent film? – all sepia stained and neglected. The past is no place to hide.
Saturday, reflections on Saturday…the years that crept past your window, the fears that slipped through the door.
I’m talking about a time when I thought so much of you, talking about a time when I had your touch.
And I know it’s not done, but I will be waiting here eternally ‘til you find the time.

I’m talking about a time when I kissed your face and I’m talking about a time, an emotion and place.
And I know it’s not done, but I will be waiting here eternally ‘til you make a contribution, ‘til you make a resolution when you find the time.

    Colamerica

Hey bushy bushy blonde hairdo with your butterfly eyes
I say you’re nobody’s hero with your mafia ties.
You give me colamericana. You give me kisses from France
And in the cattle market an Aborigine dance and I give you

Romantic lies, longing sighs, flowers for your hair.
There’s no getting through to this dead end dude when spring is in the air.
Those subway nights and high rise sights skyscraper away ooh yeh
And no stupid law, no law can take your pride away.

Hey sleazy sleazy go easy. You’ve got your sycophant fans.
You come on all nice and bright and breezy. You didn’t even give us a chance.
Your daddy’s good-looking, well your mama says “He’ll do”.
What you got cooking? I know I’m untrue but I’ll give you

Romantic lies, longing sighs, flowers for your hair.
There’s no getting through to this dead end dude when spring is in the air.
No lonely night’s gonna make it right. I scrape away ooh yeh.
And no law, no no stupid law can take your pride away.

    No Sound Now

Cast your eyes. Cast those pussy cat eyes upon the sky.
The truth may come and find you.
The odds are still on – let’s say a million to one – and ponder on the pros and cons.
But I’ve been looking for days so how long does it take to argue out the ins and outs?

I sink into a dream in a strange land and I’m walking through the sea to the hot sand
And if only for the breeze there is no sound now.

    Where do you go? Said
Where do your thoughts go when you close your eyes and let the spirit move you?
And if you think for a while, not withstanding the trials
You can sit and wait and contemplate.
But I’ve been waiting for days so how long must I wait
To talk about my seeds of doubt?

I’m walking through the streets of your dream town.
Where the people used to be there’s a ghost town
And if only for the breeze there is no sound now.

    I know I’m not a king. I am a fall guy.
If you tell me everything then I will know why
Only in my mind there is no sound now.

    You Think, So You Are

Wipe out those tears; I’ve seen them all before.
Small talk your fears; I’ve heard them all before.

You think so you are. That’s why you’re sad as hell.
I think I am as sad as hell as well.

I love your sadness and I love you sadly.

Blue nights, black days oh I know all about.
I came; I’ll stay until we talk it out.
You think so you are. That’s why you’re sad as hell.
I think I am as sad as hell as well.

I love your sadness and I love you sadly.

All things must change. No lives can stay the same.
All things must end. They come to life again.

You think so you are. That’s why you’re sad as hell.
I think I am as sad as hell as well.

    No Sensation

No sensation, no cruel twist of fate. No limitation for no time is too late.
No beginnings or endings to contrive. There’s heaven and a chance to come alive.

No sensation. There’s no cause to embrace. No limitation to life, time nor space.
No deceiving. I was giving to receive. There’s heaven and a reason to believe.

    You took your time.

No sensation. There’s no wise words to voice. No limitation of change, chance nor choice.
No peacemaker could ever pacify my mind. There’s heaven in the swirling sands of time.

    I’m alive. I’m dead. I’m alive.

    Wheels Within Wheels

He calls and you heel. While you stare he steals and then talks in terms of salvation,
All in good time, all in good taste, and now you’re broken sets in motion

Wheels within wheels, wheels within wheels,
Wheels within wheels, wheels within wheels.

We know, and you’re so young. Come on. Come on.
You say you need a friend to keep your peace of mind bitter to the end.
Come on down. Come on down
To the bottomless pit of my heart, to the murky depths of my soul.
I’m asking you to give me a start. I’m telling you to let us go.
You paint us all so black.

He smiles. We all laugh. That smile, it’s like a photograph,
And we talk when we are told to, talk in good faith, all in good taste.
    The constant winding, binding, grinding

Wheels within wheels, wheels within wheels,
Wheels within wheels, wheels within wheels.

We know, and you’re so young. Come on. Come on.
You say nobody cares but there you’re wrong because everybody cares.
Come on down. Come on down.
To the bottomless pit of my heart, to the murky depths of my soul.
I’m asking you to give me a start. I’m telling you to let us go.
You paint us all so black. Don’t paint us all so black.

    Spacedust (Outro)

Worlds above me rain down on me pennies for my eyes
Angel voices ever singing echo through the sky.
They’re holier than thou, but they’re just spacedust now, following their calling.
You fall to sleep; you keep on falling – that’s the way life goes
And what you give is all you’re given, as you reap you sew.
You’re holier than thou, but you’re just spacedust now, following your calling.
Worlds around you, worlds inside you, worlds you’ll never know.
In unending new beginnings, let the record show.
I’m holier than thou, but I’m just spacedust now, following my calling
